Employer: ELI - Extreme Light Infrastructure
Place: Prague, Czech Republic
Description:
Responsible for the design, the installation and the validation of fast, SIL-3 rated interlock systems for the facility. The institute was building a number of PW-class LASERs at medium to high repetition rates.
These require machine protection loops, based on next-pulse (sub-millisecond) interlock signals computation from high speed diagnostics and signal processing on the Labview-RT platform and FPGAs. In parallel, I was also developing a facility-wide interlocking scheme based on SIL-3 rated PLCs and SCADA systems to ensure safe operation of all the LASERs at any time.

Employer: University of Wisconsin
Place: South Pole Station, Antarctica
Description:
Responsible for the operation of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory experiment at the Geographic South Pole. The duty involved electronics and instrumentation maintenance / improving / troubleshooting work to keep data taking up and running 24/7, software debugging and repairing, system administration (Linux), hardware commissioning, planning ahead the next summer season and doing consultative reporting of technical solutions to the different institutes of the international collaboration. This position involved a 14-months stay amongst a small isolated community at the geographic South Pole in Antarctica. Thorough medical examinations to work at high altitude, extreme cold and very remote conditions were passed, alongside with a detailed psychological training and evaluation, since no advanced medical care nor any evacuation is possible during the polar winter.
Type of business or sector: Research / Astrophysics (for more information: http://www.icecube.wisc.edu)
Employer: European Organisation for Nuclear Research - CERN
Place: Geneva, Switzerland
Description:
Electronics and instrumentation design, such as critical self test functions to ensure a full reliability of the beam loss monitoring systems at any time. This project involved implementation of complex signal processing functions on large scale FPGAs, designing fault tolerant data transfer systems and integration in existing radiation tolerant electronics. I also designed motion control electronics for the wire scanners in the beam profile monitoring section, involving a good understanding of feedback loops (servo/drive), taking part in the design of the application software (Java, Labview) and working towards the integration of this subsystem in the whole design of the particles accelerator.
